Teachers vow to strike back at 'abusive'district officials

Teachers in Muheza District have vowed to "immediately retaliate" and not wait for the Government to dismiss abusive district officials. They were responding to the dismissal of Bukoba district commissioner Albert Mnali who was sacked for ordering a policeman to cane teachers in his district. "We will hit such abusers back if they do something like that, we will not wait for their dismissal first," said a teacher who declined to be identified. President Jakaya Kikwete fired the disgraced DC on Friday as criticism mounted in various quarters over the incident. Thirty-two teachers at three schools were flogged after the DC accused them of misconduct. The DC maintained that he was right to do so because the teachers were disobeying him. Some teachers who spoke to The Citizen following the DC's dismissal said they were happy with the President's decision. But they said several other district leaders were still treating teachers and other civil servants in manners that violated the Public Service Code of Conduct. "This was too much, and if anything like that happens to us again we will not tolerate it. Noone has the right to flog us like that," said the teachers. However, some residents in Muheza township said Mr Mnali's directive was an extreme though they agreed with his "objective". They said some teachers at public schools were not performing their responsibilities, and hence deserved a hard stance.
