SHORT-TERM CONSULTANCY ASSESSMENT OF IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE AND CLIMATE

VARIABILITY IN THE WATER SECTOR IN TANZANIA

UNDP wishes to recruit Consultant(s) to undertake a country-wide assessment and provide a comprehensive picture of the Impacts of Climate Change and Climate Variability in the Water Sector, particularly the water Basins in Tanzania. The study will identify Policy gaps and opportunities that will enable the Government to formulate plans and strategies for adaptation in the Water Sector and Community participation.

Some of the Duties and Responsibilities

:§ Assessing and characterizing the current climate change effects in water resources; Impacts of Climate Change in the water sector, including impact considerations in national policies, strategies and plans; current vulnerability of the sector to climate change (review IPCC 2007 report on issues related to Tanzanian situation, review if available, CC predictions on the impact of water resources in the basins and review and link NAPA with IWRM framework).

§ Assessment of current socio-economic conditions and vulnerability (e.g. irrigation, hydropower production, coastal resources, transport infrastructure, etc); Produce baseline information (data) on climate change effects and adaptation within the water sector (current status). Review and use lessons learnt in Pangani climate change vulnerability assessment and provide framework and mechanism to improve understanding of the economic and social consequences of climate change in water sector and mitigation measures countrywide.

§ Availability of data and other technical resources to estimate impacts of climate change, revise water resources management plans and to support decision making; Outline mechanism on how to incorporate climate change information into present water resource management plans.

§ Present the findings of the study to the stakeholders meetings.

Qualifications, Experience & Skills:

Preferably Masters Degree or PhD in Meteorology, Water Resources Management, Hydro-Meteorology, Engineering, Naturals Sciences, Natural Resources Management/Environment, or related fields. A minimum of 10 years working in the Climate and Water Resources related aspects or relevant sector. Experience in Climate Change Scenario Modelling for Climate Predictions;
