POSTGRADUATE STUDENT BURSARIES

The SSAWRN invites applications from interested students from the sub-Saharan African region to submit proposals and applications for a post-graduate bursary. The applications should be accompanied by a detailed CV with information containing contact details, educational qualifications and language capacity, the course of study they are
applying for (research based MPhil / MSc or PhD), a brief (200 word) summary of the proposed field of study and the contact details of two referees.
We particularly encourage inter-disciplinary projects under the above noted theme that have potential benefits to the region.
Applicants should also indicate which of the four network nodes they would prefer to study at (consult the websites for further details of the range of expertise available at the different nodes or contact the SSAWRN secretariat, using the contact details above, for additional assistance and guidance). Admission to an MPhil/MSc/PhD programme will depend on the requirements and regulations of each of the universities who are members of the SSAWRN and depend upon the number of places available. Prospective MPhil/PhD students to be funded by the SSAWRN are advised to consult the admission requirements for the relevant university departments.
A maximum total of 8 MSc/MPhil and 4 PhD are available and the awards will provide funding for a three year period of full-time study for PhD and 2 years for MSc/MPhil. The awards will cover registration fees, basic living expenses and project running costs. Additional funds are available to support travel to local and/or regional conferences and interactions between students and staff within the network.
It is normally expected that an MPhil/MSc degree would be completed in a 2 year period, while a PhD is expected to take 3 years to complete.

CLOSING DATE FOR SUBMISSIONS

The closing date for all applications is December 3, 2010. Decisions on the awards of bursaries which will be conditional on a prospective student being admitted to one of the participating universities will be made before the end of December 2010, after which applicants will be informed. Registration of students will be done in accordance with the regulations of the university to which a student will have been admitted. Successful applicants will be expected to start their study programmes during the early part of February 2011.
